Blessed Trifón Tobar Calzada, also known as Jerónimo, was a revered Catholic monk and member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on July 3, 1876, in Susinos, Burgos, Spain. From a young age, Trifón displayed a deep devotion to his faith and felt a calling to dedicate his life to God.
Joining the Marist Brothers, Trifón embraced the religious life with great fervor. He committed himself to the ideals of the order, which focused on providing education to children and youth. Trifón's dedication and natural aptitude allowed him to excel in his studies and ministerial work, demonstrating a genuine care for the well-being and spiritual growth of his students.
Unfortunately, Trifón's life was tragically cut short during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. In the midst of escalating conflict, many religious figures became targets of persecution and violence. Trifón, as a devoted Catholic monk, was particularly vulnerable.
On July 22, 1936, in Redueña, Madrid, Trifón became a victim of religious persecution and was martyred for his unwavering faith. He bravely stood his ground, refusing to renounce his beliefs despite the dire circumstances. Trifón's martyrdom exemplified his unyielding commitment to Christ and the teachings of the Catholic Church.
In recognition of his courageous sacrifice, Trifón was venerated by Pope Francis on June 3, 2013, through a decree of martyrology. This act of veneration acknowledged Trifón's willingness to lay down his life for his faith, marking him as a venerable figure worthy of honor.
Later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis elevated Trifón's status within the Catholic Church by beatifying him. This beatification confirmed Trifón's martyrdom and recognized his ability to intercede on behalf of the faithful.
