Biography

Blessed Tomás Valera González, also known as Tomás Valera, was a devout Catholic layman from the diocese of Almería, Spain, who became a martyr during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated for his unwavering faith and courageous witness to Christ, and his feast day is celebrated on May 20th.

Tomás Valera was born on October 7, 1918, in the town of Sorbas, located in the province of Almería, Spain. He grew up in a deeply religious family and received a solid Catholic upbringing. Known for his piety and love for God, he actively participated in the life of his local parish, serving as an acolyte and committing himself to various charitable works.

However, Tomás' life took a tragic turn during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), a period marked by intense political and social conflict in Spain. As the conflict escalated, Catholicism faced persecution by various factions. Given his staunch and unyielding faith, Tomás could not abandon his religious beliefs, despite the dangers and threats that lay ahead.

In 1938, at the tender age of 19, Tomás Valera met his martyrdom in the town of Turón, located in the province of Granada. The circumstances surrounding his death remain shrouded in historical context, but his sacrifice for the faith is undeniable. Tomás remained steadfast in his Christian convictions, refusing to renounce his allegiance to God and the Catholic Church.

Recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope Francis proclaimed the decree of martyrdom on June 14, 2016, allowing for Tomás Valera's official veneration. The beatification ceremony took place on March 25, 2017, in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, representing the Holy Father.

Blessed Tomás Valera González serves as an inspiration to all believers, calling them to remain strong in their faith, even in the face of adversity. His courageous witness reminds us of the supreme importance of staying faithful to our Lord Jesus Christ, no matter the cost. May his intercession empower us to stand firm in our Christian convictions and to be courageous witnesses for the Gospel in our own lives.
