Birth: March 7, 1898
Death: September 25, 1936
Blessed Tomás Gil De La Cal, also known as Tomás Gil De La Cal, was a courageous and devout Catholic postulant in the Salesians of Don Bosco. He was born on 7 March 1898 in Guzmán, Burgos, Spain, to a deeply religious family.
From a young age, Tomás showed great piety and a strong desire to follow the path of holiness. This led him to join the Salesians of Don Bosco, an order known for its commitment to the education and spiritual guidance of young people. Tomás' dedication and genuine love for God and others made him a well-respected member of the community.
Unfortunately, during a dark period in Spain's history, the Spanish Civil War erupted, bringing about great social and political unrest. As the war waged on, the Salesians and other religious institutions came under severe persecution. Despite the danger, Tomás steadfastly remained true to his faith and continued his journey towards priesthood.
On 25 September 1936, in the midst of the war, Tomás Gil De La Cal was arrested in Madrid. He was known for his unwavering faith and dedication to his religious calling, which ultimately led to his martyrdom. Tomás was cruelly and unjustly executed for his beliefs, becoming a true witness of faith and love, even in the face of persecution and brutality.
Recognizing his heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed Tomás Gil De La Cal as "Blessed" on 28 October 2007. This act of beatification not only honors his outstanding example of faith but also highlights his deep commitment to service and sacrifice for the sake of Christ.
Today, the Church celebrates Blessed Tomás Gil De La Cal's feast day on 25 September. He serves as an inspiration for all those who face persecution for their religious beliefs and a reminder of the courage and steadfastness needed to follow Christ wholeheartedly, even in the most challenging circumstances.
