Biography

Blessed Tomás Galipienzo Perlada, also known as Blessed Thomas Galipienzo Perlada, was a dedicated member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on 6 March 1897 in Cascante, Navarra, Spain, and his unwavering faith and commitment to serving God led him to join the congregation.

On 15 August 1914, Tomás Galipienzo Perlada made his profession of religious vows as a Claretian. Years later, on 21 May 1921, he was ordained a priest, and he dedicated himself to his priestly ministry, working diligently to spread the message of the Gospel and serve the spiritual needs of his community.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Father Tomás Galipienzo Perlada suffered martyrdom for his faith. On 1 September 1936, he was unjustly arrested, accused of being an enemy of the state, and subsequently executed by being shot in Paterna, Valencia, Spain.

His heroic death, alongside numerous other Claretian members who also sacrificed their lives during the Spanish Civil War, has earned him a place among the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. His memory is commemorated on 1 September, and he is also remembered on 1 February along with his fellow martyrs.

The unwavering dedication and courage of Father Tomás Galipienzo Perlada, who laid down his life for his faith, were recognized by Pope Francis. On 21 December 2016, the Pope issued a decree of martyrdom, venerating him for his witness and sacrifice. Further acknowledging his sanctity, Father Tomás Galipienzo Perlada was beatified on 21 October 2017 at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, representing the Pope.

Blessed Tomás Galipienzo Perlada serves as an inspiration to all believers, a martyr who faithfully embraced his calling as a priest and remained steadfast in his faith amidst persecution. His memory continues to be cherished by the faithful, who recognize his selfless sacrifice and seek his intercession in their own spiritual journey.
