Biography

Blessed Tomás Alonso Sanjuán, also known as Blessed Tomás Sanjuán Alonso, was a Salesian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 13 March 1893 in Vitigudino, a town in Salamanca, Spain.

From an early age, Tomás showed a strong devotion to the Catholic faith, and he entered the Salesian Congregation in Spain, where he received his formation as a priest. After his ordination, he dedicated his life to serving others, particularly the youth, following the charism of St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesian order.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Tomás faced great challenges while being faithful to his priestly duties. He fearlessly continued his apostolic work, providing spiritual guidance and support to the people amid the chaos and danger of the war-torn society.

Sadly, on 31 August 1936, in Málaga, Spain, Blessed Tomás fell victim to the violence and persecution that gripped the country at the time. He was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith and his refusal to abandon his vocation, even in the face of grave danger.

Recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI declared Blessed Tomás Alonso Sanjuán venerable on 26 June 2006, and later, on 28 October 2007, he beatified him. This beatification ceremony was a testament to his sanctity and the testament of his faithful witness to Christ in the midst of persecution.

Blessed Tomás serves as an inspiring example of courage, faith, and dedication to the Gospel. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire many, reminding all believers to stand firm in their convictions, even in the midst of adversity. On his feast day, which is celebrated on 31 August, the faithful honor and remember the witness of Blessed Tomás Alonso Sanjuán, seeking his intercession and following his example of unwavering faith in the face of persecution.
