Biography

Blessed TomÖs Sitjar Fortiá, also known as Blessed TomÖs Sitjar, was born on 21 March 1866 in Girona, Spain. He showed great devotion and piety from an early age and went on to join the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1880. After completing his studies, he was ordained as a priest.

As a committed Jesuit, Blessed TomÖs served in various capacities within the Society. He was appointed as the Rector of novices, where he guided and mentored young men who aspired to become Jesuit priests. His selfless dedication and exemplary leadership qualities were evident in his ministry.

Notably, Blessed TomÖs served as the Superior of the Jesuit community in Gandia, Spain, during a challenging period in history. This was during the Spanish Civil War, which brought significant turmoil and persecution to the Catholic Church. Despite the hardships and dangers, he remained steadfast in his faith and continued to provide spiritual guidance to his fellow Jesuits and the broader Catholic community in Gandia.

Tragically, his unwavering commitment to his faith ultimately led to his martyrdom. On 19 August 1936, in Gandía, Valencia, Spain, Blessed TomÖs Sitjar Fortiá was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. His strong belief in the Gospel and his refusal to renounce his Catholic faith in the face of persecution became a testament to his unyielding devotion.

Blessed TomÖs Sitjar Fortiá's life and sacrifice were recognized and venerated by the Catholic Church. On 20 December 1999, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtue. Later, on 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II officially beatified him, bestowing the title of "Blessed" upon him.

Although specific information about his representation is not provided, it is common for Catholic saints and blessed individuals to be represented in artwork and statues, often depicting them in scenes or symbols associated with their life, martyrdom, or devotion to Jesus Christ. Devotees of Blessed TomÖs Sitjar Fortiá may choose to remember and honor him by praying to him or seeking his intercession on their behalf, especially on his feast day of 19 August.
