Biography

Blessed Thomas Welbourne, also known as Thomas Wellburn, was a lifelong layman in the apostolic vicariate of England during a turbulent period of Catholic persecution. Born in Hutton Bushel, North Yorkshire, England, Thomas led a humble life as a school teacher.

Thomas was a devout Catholic and openly exhibited his faith during a time when practicing Catholicism was punishable by law. His unwavering dedication to his beliefs eventually led to his martyrdom in the persecutions of King James I.

On August 1, 1605, in York, North Yorkshire, England, Thomas was captured and accused of the crime of being a vocal Catholic. He was unjustly sentenced to death by hanging. Thomas met his martyrdom with great courage and faith, remaining steadfast until the very end.

Recognizing his heroic witness to the Catholic faith and the sacrifice he made for his beliefs, Pope Pius XI declared Thomas Welbourne venerable on December 8, 1929, with a decree of martyrdom. Later that same month, on December 15, 1929, Pope Pius XI beatified Thomas Welbourne, bestowing the title of "Blessed" upon him.

Blessed Thomas Welbourne's feast day is celebrated on August 1st, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. His life serves as a reminder of the hardships faced by Catholics during the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras in England and the unwavering faith that inspired individuals like Thomas to remain true to their beliefs, even in the face of persecution and death.
