Feast Day: August 16
Death: August 1, 18
Blessed Maria Gengoro was a devout laywoman in the diocese of Fukuoka, Japan. She was born in Kiyota, Japan, and is recognized as one of the 205 Martyrs of Japan.
Maria was married to Blessed Thomas Gengoro and they were blessed with a son named Blessed Iacobus. As a faithful Catholic, Maria actively participated in the Confraternity of the Rosary, a religious association dedicated to the devotion of the Holy Rosary. This spiritual commitment played a significant role in her life, strengthening her faith and providing solace in times of persecution.
During the era of the governor Yetsundo, when Christianity faced severe persecution in Japan, Maria Gengoro boldly embraced her faith and remained steadfast. Despite the danger posed by the authorities, she refused to renounce her religious beliefs. Consequently, Maria, along with many other fellow believers, fell victim to the persecutions enacted against Catholics in Japan.
Maria Gengoro's martyrdom occurred in Kokura, Fukuoka. Tradition holds that she was crucified upside down at sunrise on August 16, 1620. Her body was subsequently burned, and her ashes scattered. Her unwavering faith in the face of such brutal persecution serves as a testament to her devotion to God.
Recognizing her sacrifice, on February 26, 1866, Pope Pius IX declared Maria Gengoro a martyr of the Catholic faith. She was beatified by Pope Pius IX on May 7, 1867, further honoring her as a blessed individual within the Catholic Church.
Blessed Maria Gengoro's feast days are celebrated on August 16, the day she was martyred, and September 10, commemorating her inclusion among the 205 Martyrs of Japan.
Although little else is known about her life, the story of Maria Gengoro serves as an inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the strength of our faith and the courage to stand firm in the face of adversity. May her committed dedication to God continue to inspire Catholics worldwide.
