Biography

Blessed Thomas Ford, also known as Thomas Forde, was born in Devon, Devonshire, England. He received a Master of Arts at Trinity College, Oxford, England on 14 July 1567, where he excelled in his studies. After completing his education, Thomas became a Fellow of Trinity College.

However, driven by a deep desire for knowledge and spiritual growth, Thomas made the momentous decision to leave England and pursue further studies at the English College in Douai, France in 1570. It was in Douai that he immersed himself in the Catholic faith and honed his theological understanding.

Following his time in France, Thomas was ordained to the priesthood in March 1573 at Brussels, Belgium. He returned to the apostolic vicariate of England on 2 May 1576 to serve his fellow Catholics who faced increasing persecution under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

Recognized for his dedication to his faith and his unwavering commitment to serving the Catholic community in England, Thomas Ford was appointed as the chaplain to Edward Yates and the Bridgettins at Lyford, Berkshire. He ministered to the spiritual needs of the faithful, providing support and guidance during a time of immense religious turmoil.

Tragically, Thomas's steadfast adherence to the Catholic faith made him a target for the authorities. On 17 July 1581, he was arrested, accused of being part of a non-existent conspiracy of Catholics against the crown. Imprisoned in the Tower of London, Thomas endured severe torture in an attempt to extract bogus confessions from him.

Despite the intense suffering he endured, Thomas Ford remained resolute in his faith and refused to betray his beliefs. His unshakable dedication to God and the Catholic Church led to his unjust trial for treason. On 28 May 1582, he was hanged at Tyburn, London, England, joining the ranks of those who sacrificed their lives for their religious convictions during the persecutions of Queen Elizabeth I.

Blessed Thomas Ford's martyrdom became a testament to his unyielding faith and his unwavering commitment to Christ. His courage in the face of persecution remains an inspiration to Catholics worldwide. Recognizing his sacrifice and the sanctity of his life, Pope Leo XIII beatified Thomas Ford on 29 December 1886, elevating him to the esteemed rank of the blessed.

Blessed Thomas Ford's feast day is celebrated on 28 May, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. His memory serves as a reminder of the enduring faith of those who stand up for their beliefs, even in the face of persecution and adversity.
