Biography

Blessed Theodoric of Saint Evroult, also known as Theodoric of Mathonville or Thierry, was a devout Benedictine monk and scholar who played a pivotal role in the revival and spiritual growth of the Abbey of Saint-Evroult. He was born in Mathonville, Normandy, in modern-day France, and received his education under his uncle and godfather, Abbot Theodoric of Jumièges Abbey.

Inspired by the piety and dedication of his uncle, Theodoric entered the monastic life and became a Benedictine monk. He later went on to serve as prior and rector of the Jumièges monastic school, where he focused on imparting knowledge and spiritual guidance to his fellow brethren. It was his strong belief in the Benedictine Rule and his devotion to religious life that led him to embark on a significant journey.

In 1050, Theodoric led a group of fellow monks to reclaim the abandoned Abbey of Saint-Evroult in Onche, Normandy. Under his exceptional leadership, the abbey flourished once again and quickly regained its status as a prominent spiritual and educational center in the region. Theodoric's immense dedication to the abbey's restoration was evident through his unwavering support for the monks' studies and the meticulous preservation of the school and scriptorium.

Despite the success and growth of the abbey, Theodoric faced accusations of neglecting the administrative and material concerns of the institution. In response, he humbly offered his resignation, willing to set aside his responsibilities. However, his bishop, recognizing Theodoric's immense contributions, refused to accept his resignation, providing a show of support and appreciation for his steadfast commitment.

Ultimately, Theodoric retired from his duties in 1057, allowing him to embark on a pilgrimage to the Holy Lands. Sadly, it was during this pilgrimage that he passed away on August 1, 1058, at the altar of the church of Saint Nicholas on Cyprus, due to natural causes. He was laid to rest nearby.

Blessed Theodoric of Saint Evroult is venerated as a beacon of piety and dedication to the Benedictine Rule. His passion for religious life, coupled with his unwavering commitment to the revival of the Abbey of Saint-Evroult, left an indelible impact on the spiritual and educational landscape of the region. His feast day is celebrated on July 1 in the Benedictine Martyrology. While he has not been officially beatified, Theodoric's life and legacy continue to inspire countless individuals in their pursuit of spiritual growth and intellectual enlightenment.
