Death: January 2, 1937
Blessed Tesifone Ortega Villamudrio, also known as Néstor Eugenio, was born on 10 April 1912 in Arlanzón, Burgos, Spain. He was a devout Catholic and dedicated his life to serving God as a monk. Tesifone became a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools, a religious congregation focused on education and the spiritual formation of young people.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Tesifone's commitment to his faith and vocation led him to remain steadfast in his devotion despite the dangers that surrounded him. He continued to teach and guide young students, providing them with both intellectual education and moral guidance during those challenging times.
However, Tesifone's unwavering faith ultimately led to his martyrdom. On 2 January 1937, in Cabezón de la Sal, Santander, Spain, he was executed because of his religious beliefs. Tesifone became a true witness to Christ, sacrificing his life for his faith.
Recognizing his courageous sacrifice, Tesifone Ortega Villamudrio was venerated on 3 June 2013 by Pope Francis, who declared him a martyr. This recognition was followed by his beatification on 13 October 2013, still under the authority of Pope Francis.
As a monk and martyr, Tesifone Ortega Villamudrio serves as an inspiration to the faithful, demonstrating the bravery and devotion it takes to live out one's faith, even in the face of persecution. His life and sacrifice continue to be remembered and celebrated, particularly on his feast day, which is observed on 2 January each year.
