Biography

Blessed Tarsykia Matskiv, also known as Tarsykia Mackiv, Tarcisia, Olga, or Olha, was a Greek Catholic Sister and martyr. She was born on 23 March 1919 in Khodoriv, Lviv District, Ukraine as Olha Mackiv. From a young age, Olha demonstrated strong faith and a deep desire to serve the Church.

On 3 May 1938, Olha entered the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate, a religious congregation dedicated to serving God and the Church. She dedicated herself to a life of prayer, service, and sacrifice. On 5 November 1940, she took her vows, being fully committed to her religious life and the mission of the congregation.

Sister Tarsykia had a special devotion to the conversion of Russia and the well-being of the Church. She made a private vow to her spiritual director, expressing her willingness to give her life for these intentions. Little did she know that she would soon be called upon to fulfill this vow.

Tragically, in the midst of great turmoil, the Bolsheviks arrived to destroy her convent. On that fateful day, Sister Tarsykia, ever faithful to her commitment, answered the door when the Bolshevik soldiers came knocking. Without warning, she was shot, sacrificing her life for her faith, the conversion of Russia, and the good of the Church. Her martyrdom stands as a testament to her unwavering devotion and love for God and others.

Sister Tarsykia's martyrdom occurred on 17 July 1944, at Chervonohrad, L'vivs'ka oblast', Ukraine, when she was just 25 years old. Her death serves as a powerful witness to the enduring strength and fidelity of the Ukrainian people during this tumultuous period in history.

Recognizing her heroic virtues and the ultimate sacrifice she made, Pope John Paul II declared Sister Tarsykia Matskiv as venerable on 24 April 2001. Later that same year, on 27 June, Pope John Paul II beatified her during a solemn ceremony held in Ukraine. Her beatification ceremony was an affirmation of her sanctity and her undying commitment to the Catholic faith.

Blessed Tarsykia Matskiv's feast day is celebrated on 18 July each year, a day dedicated to honoring her memory and seeking her intercession. She is venerated by the faithful as a powerful advocate and a model of faithfulness, courage, and selflessness.

Today, the life and witness of Blessed Tarsykia Matskiv continue to inspire Catholics around the world. Her sacrifice and martyrdom serve as a reminder of the lengths some individuals are willing to go in order to defend and uphold their religious beliefs. May her life be a source of encouragement and inspiration for all who encounter her story, reminding us of the importance of faith, devotion, and self-sacrifice in our own lives.
