Biography

Blessed Stanley Francis Rother, also known as Blessed Stanley Rother, was born on March 27, 1935, in Okarche, Oklahoma. He graduated from Mount Saint Mary's Seminary in Maryland and was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. One of his notable characteristics was his love for smoking a pipe.

In 1968, Father Rother began his missionary work in Santiago Atitlán, a small village in Sololá, Guatemala. He dedicated himself to serving the indigenous people of the community, learning their language, and immersing himself in their culture. Father Rother's primary focus was providing pastoral care, assisting with medical needs, and establishing a farmer's co-op to help improve the living conditions of the locals.

Despite the challenges and dangers he faced, Father Rother firmly believed in his mission. He once said, "We as Christians and as priests have a duty to do God's work, and if there is danger involved, that's part of that life. The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger."

Tragically, on July 28, 1981, at approximately 2 am, Father Rother was brutally shot in his rectory by unknown assailants. It is believed that he was targeted for his unwavering commitment to his faith and his tireless efforts to uplift the marginalized community he served. Father Rother's martyrdom was a testament to his profound dedication to God and the people he ministered to.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Father Stanley Francis Rother as "Blessed" on September 23, 2017. The beatification ceremony honoring him took place at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Blessed Stanley Francis Rother's feast day is celebrated on July 28th, the anniversary of his martyrdom. He serves as an inspiration to Catholics and individuals around the world, reminding them of the power of faith, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to serving others.
