Biography

Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeongheum was a layman martyr born in Gimje, Jeolla-do, South Korea, in 1756. He lived during a tumultuous period in Korean history when Catholicism was heavily persecuted by the Joseon Dynasty. Despite the danger and risks involved, Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeongheum embraced his faith fervently and played a significant role in the spread of Catholicism in Korea.

Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeongheum led a simple life as a farmer, devoting himself to his family and his community. However, inspired by his deep commitment to God, he became an active member of the Catholic Church, supporting the growing community of believers through his dedication and service.

During the late 18th century, the Joseon government issued a series of edicts, strictly prohibiting the practice of Catholicism. Despite the imminent dangers, Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeongheum courageously continued to share the Gospel, often risking his own safety to attend secret Masses, provide catechism lessons, and support fellow Christians.

In 1793, Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeongheum was arrested along with several other Catholics and imprisoned for their faith. Despite enduring severe torture and pressure to deny their beliefs, they remained steadfast in their commitment to Christ. Subsequently, Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeongheum was sentenced to death and, on August 26, 1801, he was martyred in Gimje, Jeolla-do.

Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeongheum's martyrdom became a significant catalyst for the growth of the Catholic Church in Korea. His unwavering faith and sacrifices inspired many others to embrace Christianity, leading to a rapid expansion of the Catholic community in the region.

Recognizing the heroic virtues and martyrdom of Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeongheum, he was venerated by Pope Francis on February 7, 2014, with a decree on martyrdom. Later, on August 15, 2014, Pope Francis beatified him, recognizing his sainthood and offering him as an example of faith and devotion for Catholics around the world.

Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeongheum's feast days are celebrated on August 26 and September 20 as a part of the group known as the Martyrs of Korea. They are collectively honored for their unwavering faith and witness, sacrificing their lives for their beliefs amidst severe persecution.

Today, the memory and intercession of Blessed Stanislaus Han Jeongheum serve as an inspiration to Catholics, particularly in South Korea, to stand firm in their faith and to embrace the values of love, forgiveness, and courage in the face of adversity.
