Death: September 1, 23
Blessed Sofía Ximénez Y Ximénez Del Río, also known as Sofía del Río, was born on October 11, 1876, in Valencia, Spain. She was a lifelong lay woman in the archdiocese of Valencia and dedicated her life to the service of others.
In 1905, Sofía married Carlo del Río Díez de Bulmesnella, a widower who had three children from his previous marriage. Together, they had four more children, creating a loving and blended family. However, tragedy struck when Sofía became a widow on May 27, 1927, after her husband passed away.
After Carlo's death, Sofía joined Catholic Action, an organization that promotes Catholic values and works for the betterment of society. She devoted herself to catechesis and became a teacher, providing education to those who were too poor to attend regular schools.
During the persecutions of the Spanish Civil War, Sofía's strong faith and charitable nature led her to shelter her sister, a step-daughter, and one of her cousins, who were all religious sisters. In a time of great turmoil and danger, she prioritized their safety and well-being.
Unfortunately, due to her unwavering commitment to her faith, Sofía was targeted by the anti-Christian forces of the Spanish Civil War. She was arrested and imprisoned for her religious beliefs. Tragically, on September 23, 1936, Sofía and her son, Luis, a seminarian, were executed for remaining steadfast in their devotion to Catholicism. They were martyred for their faith.
Their sacrifice and exemplary lives soon gained recognition, and on December 18, 2000, Pope John Paul II declared Sofía Ximénez Y Ximénez Del Río to be venerable, as he recognized her martyrdom. On March 11, 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified Sofía, acknowledging her sanctity and elevating her to the title of Blessed.
Blessed Sofía Ximénez Y Ximénez Del Río's life serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating unwavering faith, selfless service, and a strong commitment to the Catholic Church, even in the face of persecution. Her feast day is celebrated on September 23, commemorating the day of her martyrdom.
