Biography

Blessed Magdalena Kiyota Bokusai, also known as Magdalena of Fukuoka, was a devout lay woman who lived in the diocese of Fukuoka, Japan during the 17th century. She was married to Blessed Simon Kiyota Bokusai and both of them were known for their strong faith and commitment to their Catholic beliefs.

Magdalena was a dedicated member of the Confraternity of the Rosary, a religious association that promoted the prayer of the Holy Rosary and fostered devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her deep piety and devotion to the Rosary played a significant role in her spiritual life.

During this period in Japan's history, Christians faced severe persecution under the regime of Governor Yetsundo. The government aimed to eradicate the Catholic faith and suppress its growing influence in the country. As a result, Magdalena, along with many other faithful Catholics, became a target of persecution.

Blessed Magdalena Kiyota Bokusai was martyred in the persecutions unleashed by Governor Yetsundo. She suffered a horrific death for her unwavering faith. According to historical accounts, she was crucified upside down soon after sunrise on August 16, 1620, in Kokura, Fukuoka, Japan. This brutal execution was meant to intensify her suffering and humiliation as an act of punishment.

After her martyrdom, the authorities subjected her body to further degradation by burning it and scattering the ashes. Despite these attempts to erase all traces of her existence, her admirable witness of faith endured.

Recognizing the heroic martyrdom and shining example of Magdalena Kiyota Bokusai, Pope Pius IX declared her venerable on February 26, 1866, with a decree of martyrdom. On May 7, 1867, the same Pope beatified her, acknowledging her as a Blessed of the Catholic Church.

Blessed Magdalena Kiyota Bokusai is commemorated on August 16, the day of her crucifixion, as well as on September 10, as one of the 205 Martyrs of Japan. Her feast day brings to mind the immense courage and fidelity of all those who suffered for their faith during this tumultuous period in Japan's history.

Her life and martyrdom serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary individuals who refused to renounce their beliefs, standing firm in their commitment to the Catholic faith, even in the face of strong adversity. Blessed Magdalena Kiyota Bokusai remains an inspiration and intercessor for all those who face persecution and hardship due to their Catholic faith.
