Blessed Severino Ruiz Hidalgo, also known as Severino, was a devout monk and member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on November 5, 1907, in Fuencaliente de Lucio, Burgos, Spain. From a young age, Severino showed great devotion to his faith and a strong desire to serve God.
Severino joined the Marist Brothers, a religious congregation dedicated to providing education rooted in Christian values. As a Marist Brother, he committed himself to the education and formation of young people, helping them grow intellectually, morally, and spiritually.
During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, the Catholic Church faced severe persecution, and many religious individuals were martyred for their faith. Tragically, Severino became a victim of this violent period in the history of Spain. He was martyred on August 1, 1936, in Palma de Cervellú, Barcelona, Spain, for refusing to renounce his faith and beliefs.
Blessed Severino Ruiz Hidalgo's unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution inspired many. Recognizing his sacrifice and the sanctity of his life, Pope Francis declared him venerable on June 3, 2013, through a decree of martyrology. Later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, acknowledging his martyrdom and his intercession for the faithful.
