Birth: October 1, 1879
Death: August 20, 1936
Blessed Serapio Sanz Iranzo, born on 1 October 1879 in Muniesa, Teruel, Spain, was a Mercedarian brother who devoutly served the Catholic Church during a tumultuous period in Spanish history. He met his martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War and was subsequently recognized for his heroic virtue and sacrifice.
Serapio Sanz Iranzo grew up in a deeply religious family, and from a young age, he exhibited a strong sense of faith and a calling to serve God. His vocation led him to join the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, commonly known as the Mercedarians, known for their dedication to the redemption of Christian captives.
After professing his religious vows, Serapio wholeheartedly embraced the charism of the Mercedarian Order, dedicating his life to the service of God and the liberation of those who were suffering physically or spiritually. He served faithfully in a variety of roles, taking on responsibilities that ranged from caring for the sick and elderly to providing spiritual guidance to prisoners of war.
Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, which erupted in 1936, religious persecution reached its peak. The Mercedarian community that Serapio belonged to faced severe persecution, with many of its members targeted for their unwavering commitment to their faith. Despite the grave danger, Serapio refused to abandon those he served, and he chose to remain with his community and the people under their care.
Sadly, on 20 August 1936, Serapio Sanz Iranzo was brutally martyred in Lleida, Spain, for his steadfast faith and refusal to renounce his religious beliefs. He faced his persecutors with unwavering courage and forgiveness, embodying the teachings of Jesus Christ until his last breath.
Serapio's heroic witness was ultimately recognized by the Catholic Church. On 19 December 2011, Pope Benedict XVI decreed his martyrdom, affirming Serapio's virtuous life and sacrificial death. Pope Francis continued this recognition on 13 October 2013, beatifying Serapio Sanz Iranzo, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed."
Blessed Serapio Sanz Iranzo's feast day is commemorated on 20 August each year. As a martyr for the faith, he serves as an inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the importance of courageously living out our faith, even in the face of persecution and adversity. May his intercession and example continue to guide and inspire us in our own spiritual journeys.
