Blessed Senén López Cots, was a member of the Claretians and was born on 21 January 1915 in Barcelona, Spain. He joined the congregation and professed his religious vows on 6 January 1932. Senén was known for his deep faith, dedication, and commitment to spreading the Gospel.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Senén courageously continued his mission as a religious despite the escalating violence and persecution against the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, Senén fell victim to this religious persecution and was martyred for his faith.
On 26 July 1936, Senén was shot in Lleida, Spain, martyred for his unwavering commitment to his Christian beliefs. His death was a result of the anti-Catholic sentiment prevalent during that time. Senén's martyrdom serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by many faithful Catholics during this tragic period in Spain's history.
In recognition of his martyrdom, Senén López Cots was venerated by Pope Francis on 21 December 2016, with a decree affirming his status as a martyr. His beatification followed on 21 October 2017, celebrated at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided by Archbishop Angelo Amato.
Blessed Senén López Cots is remembered and honored for his steadfast faith, his unwavering dedication to the Claretian mission, and his ultimate sacrifice in the face of persecution. His feast days are celebrated on 26 July, the day of his martyrdom, and on 1 February, along with the other 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs who suffered during the same period.
