Blessed Segundo García Cabezas, also known as Father Segundo of Saint Teresa, was a Trinitarian priest who became a martyr during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on March 24, 1891, in Barrios de Nistoso, León, Spain.
Growing up in a devout Catholic family, Segundo developed a deep love for God and a strong calling to serve the Church. He entered the Trinitarian Order, a religious community dedicated to the redemption of captives, and was ordained a priest.
Father Segundo was known for his dedication to his ministry and his unwavering faith. He tirelessly worked for the spiritual welfare of those under his care and actively sought to alleviate the sufferings of prisoners and the oppressed. His strong devotion to Saint Teresa of Avila was an inspiration to many, and he often turned to her teachings for guidance and support.
As the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, a wave of anti-Catholic sentiment swept across the country. Father Segundo found himself targeted for his religious beliefs and his efforts to aid those who were suffering. Despite the danger, he chose to remain with his people, providing spiritual consolation and support amidst the chaos.
Tragically, on July 31, 1936, Father Segundo was captured by Republican forces in the city of And√∫jar, Jaén. He was cruelly martyred for his faith, courageously embracing his fate with unwavering conviction. His death was a testament to his unwavering commitment to God and his fellow human beings.
In recognition of his heroic virtues and martyrdom, Father Segundo García Cabezas was venerated by Pope Benedict XVI on June 26, 2006. On October 28, 2007, he was beatified by the same pope, becoming known as Blessed Segundo García Cabezas.
Today, Blessed Segundo serves as an inspiration to the faithful, a reminder of the power of faith and the sacrifice of those who lay down their lives for the sake of Christ and His Church.
