Biography

Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio, also known as the Angel of Mexico, was born on 20 January 1502 in La Gudiña, Orense, Spain, to humble Spanish peasant parents. As a child, he herded sheep and later worked as a hired field hand to help support his family.

Seeking further opportunities, Sebastian became a gentleman's valet at Salamanca. However, he felt a deeper calling and decided to embark on a journey to Puebla, Mexico, at the age of 31. In Puebla, he used his skills to build plows and wagons, taking up work as a farm hand.

Sebastian's most notable achievement came in the form of a selfless endeavor that spanned a decade. He dedicated ten years of his life to constructing a remarkable 466-mile road, connecting Mexico City to Zacatecas. In addition, he also managed the postal and delivery services along this route. This road, which he tirelessly built, is still in use to this day, a testament to his enduring legacy.

Despite becoming wealthy over time, Sebastian maintained a simple and humble existence. His heart overflowed with generosity, and he freely shared his wealth with the poor and less fortunate.

Sebastian was married twice, first at the age of 60, but he chose not to consummate either of his marriages. However, he outlived both of his brides. At the age of 72, he made a life-changing decision to give away all his wealth and embrace the Franciscan way of life. For the remaining 25 years of his life, he dedicated himself to begging for alms on behalf of his fellow Franciscans.

Witnesses of Sebastian's life testified to over 300 miracles that were attributed to his intercession. These extraordinary acts were a testament to his profound faith and deep connection with God.

Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio died on 25 February 1600 of natural causes and was laid to rest in the Chapel of the Virgin of the Conquest in the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi in Puebla, Mexico. Despite the passage of time, his body remains incorrupt, a remarkable sign of his holiness and spiritual significance.

In recognition of his exemplary life, Pope Clement XIII declared his heroic virtues on 2 May 1768, leading to his veneration. Later, on 17 May 1789, Pope Pius VI beatified him, acknowledging his lofty spiritual achievements and proclaiming him "Blessed."

The remarkable life of Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio serves as an inspiration to all, as he dedicated himself selflessly both to the physical well-being of others through his road-building efforts and to their spiritual needs through his unwavering dedication to the Franciscan charism. Even after his passing, he continues to be venerated as a miraculous intercessor and a shining example of faith, humility, and compassion.
