Feast Day: December 16
Blessed Sebastian Maggi, also known as Sebastian of Brescia, was born in 1414 to the noble Maggi family in Brescia, Italy. At the young age of 15, Sebastian joined the Dominican Order in Brescia in 1429. Despite his early entrance into the Order, it was the earliest that the Dominicans would accept him.
Throughout his life, Sebastian devoted himself to a life of zealousness and reform as a friar. He displayed a strong commitment to the ideals and rules of the Dominican Order, adhering to them with great strictness. His personal discipline and devotion to prayer and contemplation became renowned among his peers.
Sebastian's exceptional qualities and dedication led him to be appointed as the Superior of several Dominican houses. In addition to his responsibilities within his own community, he was appointed as the Vicar of a reformed congregation of Lombardy. During his time in this role, he implemented reforms and worked tirelessly to strengthen the spiritual lives of the members. Sebastian's gentle and compassionate approach when dealing with those who struggled to live as strictly as him endeared him to many.
Despite his many commitments and responsibilities, Sebastian also dedicated himself to the mission of spreading the Gospel. He engaged in missionary work, traveling to various parts of Italy to preach and bring the message of salvation to the people. Unfortunately, it was while he was on his way to a convent for a mission that Sebastian passed away in 1496, in Genoa, Italy, due to natural causes.
Even after his death, the remarkable holiness of Sebastian continued to be recognized. His body remained incorrupt, a sign of his sanctity, and attracted many pilgrims who sought his intercession. This incorruptibility was confirmed in 1963, long after his passing.
Blessed Sebastian Maggi was beatified on April 15, 1760, by Pope Clement XIII. His beatification confirmed the recognition of his cultus, the public veneration of a holy person. Today, he is remembered and honored by the Catholic Church on his feast day, which falls on December 16th each year. The life of Blessed Sebastian Maggi serves as an inspiration for all faithful, encouraging them to seek holiness, adhere to rules, and show compassion towards others.
