Blessed Scubilion Rousseau, also known as Brother Scubilionis or Jean Bernard Rousseau, was born on 21 March 1797 in Annay la-Cåte, Burgundy, France. From a young age, he exhibited great piety and a strong desire to serve God. This led him to enter the Christian Brothers' novitiate in Paris, France on 24 December 1822, where he took the name Scubilion.
After completing his religious formation, Scubilion devoted himself to the education of young children. For a period of ten years, he worked as an elementary school teacher in various locations across France. During this time, he honed his skills as an educator and became known for his dedication and ability to connect with his students.
In 1833, Scubilion's life took a dramatic turn when he was assigned to teach and work with slaves on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Here, he would spend the next 34 years of his life, dedicating himself to the spiritual and educational well-being of the oppressed and marginalized.
Upon his arrival on Reunion Island, Scubilion recognized the need to adapt his teaching methods to suit the local population. He modified his lessons to resonate with the natives' culture and traditions. Additionally, he initiated evening classes specifically tailored to the enslaved individuals on the island, offering them an opportunity for education and personal growth.
Scubilion actively collaborated with local priests and clergy, working to spread the teachings of the Catholic faith and bring many individuals to the Christian life through his example. He was known for his deep devotion, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of those he served. By his selfless actions, he became a source of inspiration and hope to the enslaved population.
Blessed Scubilion Rousseau continued his tireless mission until his death on 13 April 1867, on Reunion Island. He passed away peacefully of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and educational excellence.
In recognition of his virtuous life and the impact he made on the lives of those under his care, Scubilion was venerated on 9 June 1984 by Pope John Paul II, who declared him to have lived a life of heroic virtues. This paved the way for his beatification on 2 May 1989, once again by Pope John Paul II.
Today, Blessed Scubilion Rousseau is remembered as a model of selflessness, humility, and devotion to the service of others. His life stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and the profound impact one individual can make in the lives of others, especially those who are marginalized and in need.
