Blessed Rosario Angelo Livatino, also known as the boy judge or Il giudice ragazzino, was born on 3 October 1952 in Canicattè, Agrigento, Italy. He was the son of Vincenzo Livatino and Rosalia Corbo. From a young age, Rosario displayed exceptional academic abilities, consistently earning top marks throughout his educational journey. His dedication and hard work culminated in him graduating with honors from the law school of the University of Palermo on 9 July 1975.
Following his education, Livatino began his career in the legal civil service, working in various positions. However, his true passion lied in combating organized crime. On 29 September 1979, he became a Deputy Public Prosecutor in Agrigento, dedicating his efforts to fighting the influence of the Mafia in the region.
Recognized for his dedication and unwavering commitment to justice, Livatino was appointed as a judge in the court of Agrigento on 21 August 1989. Despite his personal piety, he chose not to join any clubs or associations, whether religious or secular. Livatino remained unmarried throughout his life, focusing his energy on his vocation as a judge and public servant.
Tragically, Blessed Rosario Angelo Livatino's life was cut short by an act of evil. On 21 September 1990, he was ambushed and murdered by the Mafia while traveling on the road between Canicattè and Agrigento, Italy. His courageous stance against organized crime made him a martyr for the cause of justice and a symbol of hope for those fighting against corruption.
In recognition of his exemplary life and ultimate sacrifice, Pope Francis declared Livatino venerable on 21 December 2020, attributing to him the decree of martyrdom. Continuing to honor his memory and legacy, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Rosario Angelo Livatino on 9 May 2021. The beatification ceremony took place in the Cathedral of San Gerlando, Agrigento, Italy, with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro presiding over the ceremony.
Blessed Rosario Angelo Livatino's feast days are celebrated on 21 September in commemoration of his martyrdom and on 29 October in the Archdiocese of Agrigento, Italy. The latter date coincides with the anniversary of his Confirmation, emphasizing his deep faith and devotion to the Catholic Church.
