Biography

Blessed Rolando De Medici, also known as Orlando, was born around the year 1330 in Milan, Italy, into the famed de Medici family. From a young age, Rolando was surrounded by wealth and prominence, benefiting from the status and influence of his noble lineage.

However, as he reached the age of 30, a profound spiritual calling led Rolando to make a radical decision. He abandoned the luxuries and privileges of his family and retired from the world, seeking a life of solitude and devotion. Rolando settled in the tranquil Alpine forests, where he embraced a hermit's existence.

Living in the wilderness, Rolando devoted himself completely to a life of prayer, meditation, and contemplation. The solitude of the mountains became his chosen path towards union with God. Stripped of material possessions, Rolando only had a goatskin garment to wear, serving as a symbol of his renunciation and detachment from worldly desires.

Blessed Rolando De Medici's life as a hermit was characterized by intense spirituality and asceticism. His days were spent in prayerful solitude, seeking communion with the divine. Over the years, his deep spiritual insights and unwavering devotion made him a revered figure among the locals, who began to seek his counsel and intercession.

On September 15, 1386, Blessed Rolando De Medici breathed his last breath, but his impact on the spiritual life of those who encountered him was profound. He was laid to rest at the Church of the Holy Church in Busseto, Italy, where his relics continue to inspire devotion and reverence.

Despite his local reputation, it took almost three centuries for the canonization process to begin for Rolando De Medici. Finally, on September 25, 1853, Pope Pius IX beatified him and officially recognized his sanctity. This act of beatification confirmed the cultus surrounding Blessed Rolando and granted him the title of Blessed within the Catholic Church.

Today, Blessed Rolando De Medici remains an example of extraordinary faith and detachment from worldly pleasures.
