Feast Day: November 13
Death: November 1, 13
Blessed Robert Scurlock, also known as Robert Scurlough or Robert Rochford, was a layman in the archdiocese of Dublin, Ireland. Born in Ireland, he lived during the Tudor era, marked by religious and political conflicts between Catholics and Protestants.
Robert Scurlock remained steadfast in his Catholic faith, despite increasing persecution and restrictions imposed on Catholics during this period. He was particularly affected by the oppressive policies of Queen Elizabeth I, who sought to suppress Catholicism in Ireland.
In a time when practicing the Catholic faith could lead to dire consequences, Robert Scurlock courageously continued to attend secret Masses and provide support to his fellow Catholics. His steadfast devotion to Catholicism in the face of danger and adversity earned him a revered place among the Irish Martyrs.
On November 13, 1581, Robert Scurlock joined several other Irish Catholics who were arrested and accused of treason against the English crown. They were charged with refusing to acknowledge the supremacy of the Queen as the head of the Church and for aiding priests who were operating secretly in Ireland. Despite the severe consequences that awaited them, Robert Scurlock and his fellow martyrs remained resolute in their commitment to their faith.
Following a trial, Robert Scurlock was found guilty and sentenced to death. On the same day, November 13, 1581, he was executed, bravely embracing martyrdom as a witness to his unwavering Catholic convictions. His martyrdom took place in Dublin, Ireland, where he had lived and carried out his mission of supporting the Catholic community.
It wasn't until several hundred years later that Robert Scurlock's heroic sacrifice and faithful witness were officially recognized by the Catholic Church. On July 6, 1991, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable, acknowledging his life of virtue and martyrdom. Subsequently, on September 27, 1992, Pope John Paul II beatified him in Rome, Italy, further affirming his sanctity and placing him among the ranks of the Blessed.
Blessed Robert Scurlock's feast days are celebrated on both November 13, the day of his martyrdom, and June 20, as one of the Irish Martyrs. Catholics around the world honor his memory and seek his intercession, recognizing his extraordinary witness and unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith in the face of persecution and adversity.
While there is little information available about specific representations or miracles attributed to Blessed Robert Scurlock, his steadfast faith and martyrdom continue to inspire and serve as an example of courage and devotion to Catholics worldwide.
