Blessed Rizziero of Muccia, also known as Ricerio, Richerius, Rinieri, or Rizzerio, was born to a wealthy noble family in an unspecified date. He grew up in Bologna, Italy, where he pursued a career in law, displaying great promise and potential as a student.
However, in 1222, something deeply transformative happened in Rizziero's life. He felt a strong calling to give up his worldly aspirations and dedicate himself fully to a life of spirituality and service to God. Inspired by the teachings and example of Saint Francis of Assisi, he abandoned his legal studies and became one of the first Franciscan friars.
Blessed Rizziero quickly became known for his unwavering commitment to the Franciscan Rule and for his joyful adherence to the teachings of Saint Francis. He formed a close friendship with Saint Francis himself and was blessed with the opportunity to be at his beloved mentor's deathbed.
Rizziero's exceptional qualities as a speaker, preacher, and evangelist became evident as he passionately shared the message of the Gospel with others. His enthusiasm and tireless dedication to spreading the word of God made a profound impact on those who listened to him, as he fearlessly embraced the call to live a life of poverty, humility, and compassion.
Eventually, Blessed Rizziero was appointed as the Minister Provincial of the Franciscans in the Marches of Ancona, Italy. In this role, he continued to inspire and guide his fellow friars to embrace the Franciscan way of life, encouraging them to embrace their vocation with joy and fervor.
During his later years, Rizziero chose to live near the hermitage of Saint James the Apostle in Muccia, Italy. Here, he continued to deepen his spirituality and serve as an example to others through his simple and humble lifestyle.
Blessed Rizziero of Muccia passed away on 7 February 1236 in Mucia, Piceno, Italy, having lived a life dedicated to God and the teachings of Saint Francis. He died of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of fervent faith, commitment to poverty, and tireless evangelization.
Recognizing his profound sanctity and the impact he had on those around him, Blessed Rizziero was beatified on 14 December 1838 by Pope Gregory XVI, who confirmed his cultus. He is honored and venerated on 7 February with some calendars also commemorating him on 12 February.
Blessed Rizziero of Muccia remains an inspiring figure in the Franciscan tradition and for all those who are called to live a life of devotion and simplicity. His life serves as a reminder of the transformative power of faith and the joy that comes from wholeheartedly embracing the teachings of Christ.
