Biography

Blessed Richard Simpson, born around 1554 in Well, near Ripon, North Yorkshire, England, was a devoted priest in the apostolic vicariate of England during a tumultuous period in English history. Not much is known about his early life, but he eventually answered the call to serve as a priest, dedicating himself to the Catholic faith and the ministry of the Church.

As a Catholic priest in England, Blessed Richard Simpson lived during a time of intense religious persecution under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. During this period, the practice of Catholicism was heavily suppressed, and priests were particularly targeted for their allegiance to the Catholic Church.

Blessed Richard Simpson wholeheartedly embraced his role as a Catholic priest, despite the risks and dangers involved. He tirelessly worked to provide spiritual guidance, celebrate Mass, and administer the sacraments to the Catholic faithful, who were often forced to practice their faith in secret to avoid persecution.

However, Blessed Richard Simpson's unwavering commitment to his faith ultimately led to his martyrdom. On 24 July 1588, he was captured in Derby, Derbyshire, England, and accused of treason and practicing Catholicism. As a result, he was sentenced to death.
