Blessed Richard Rolle De Hampole, also known as Richard Rolle of Hampole, was an esteemed figure of the 14th century. Born around 1300 in Thornton, Yorkshire, England, he displayed exceptional academic prowess from a young age and pursued his education at Oxford University. Enriching his knowledge and understanding, Rolle proceeded to study in Paris, France, from 1320 to 1326.

After his studies abroad, Richard Rolle returned to England, where he chose to live as a hermit on his family's estate. However, his decision to embrace solitude and dedicate himself entirely to his spiritual life faced opposition from certain family members, who threatened to have him declared mentally ill. Owing to their disapproval, Rolle sought refuge on the estate of his friend and college classmate, John Dalton of Pickering, in 1326.

During this period of seclusion, Richard Rolle experienced profound visions and mystical encounters, which shaped the trajectory of his spiritual journey. Encouraged by these transformative experiences, he embarked on a period of wandering across England, seeking solitude and deepening his relationship with God.
