Blessed Richard Newport

Biography

Blessed Richard Newport, also known as Richard Smith, was born in Ashby Saint Legers, Northamptonshire, England. He was a devout Catholic who dedicated his life to the priesthood, even in the face of intense persecution during the reign of King James I.

Richard embarked on his religious studies in Douai, France, where he acquired a solid foundation in theology. Recognizing his potential, he was sent to Rome, Italy, to further his education. In 1597, he was ordained a priest, becoming fully equipped to serve the Catholic community.

Returning to his homeland, Father Richard Newport began his mission as a covert priest in London. For several years, he fearlessly ministered to the underground Catholic community, providing them with spiritual guidance and administering the sacraments in secret. However, his dedication would ultimately cost him dearly.

Father Richard experienced the horrors of imprisonment and exile twice due to his commitment to his faith and priesthood. Despite these ordeals, he repeatedly returned to England to continue his ministry, knowing the risks that awaited him. His perseverance in the face of persecution is a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to the Catholic cause.

Eventually, the authorities caught up with Father Richard Newport, and he was arrested once more. After standing trial, he was unjustly condemned to death. On May 30, 1612, he met his martyrdom at Tyburn, London, where he was hanged, drawn, and quartered.

The memory of Blessed Richard Newport, along with his fellow Douai Martyrs, is cherished by the Catholic Church. They are collectively venerated on October 29th as Martyrs of Douai, paying homage to their valiant sacrifice for the faith.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Pius XI declared Father Richard Newport venerable on December 8, 1929, and beatified him on December 15 of the same year. His beatification stands as a testament to his steadfastness in the face of persecution and his ultimate sacrifice in defense of the Catholic faith.
