Blessed Richard Featherstone, also known as Richard Fetherston, was born in England and is venerated as a Catholic martyr. He received his education at the prestigious University of Cambridge in England. Known for his intelligence and dedication, Featherstone became a tutor to Princess Mary Tutor during his career. His role as a tutor allowed him to use his scholarly knowledge to educate the princess, who later became Queen Mary I of England.
Featherstone's contributions extended beyond his role as a tutor, as he also served as an Archdeacon of Brecknock. This position granted him the responsibility of overseeing the administrative and clerical affairs of the diocese. Furthermore, Featherstone held the esteemed position of Chaplain to Queen Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of King Henry VIII. As her chaplain, he provided spiritual guidance and support to Queen Catherine during her tumultuous marriage to the king.
In a pivotal moment of his life, Featherstone fearlessly defended Queen Catherine's honor before the convocation, a high-ranking assembly of clergy in England. He passionately argued against the annulment of the queen's marriage to King Henry VIII, upholding the sanctity of their union. Unfortunately, his defense of Queen Catherine led to his downfall. Featherstone was charged with treason and subsequently found guilty, facing severe consequences for his unwavering loyalty to the queen.
On July 30, 1540, Blessed Richard Featherstone was executed by being hanged, drawn, and quartered at Smithfield in England. Despite the unjust nature of his execution, his steadfast adherence to his beliefs and defense of Queen Catherine established him as a martyr for the Catholic faith.
Featherstone's sacrifice and dedication to his principles did not go unnoticed, as he was beatified on December 29, 1886, by Pope Leo XIII. This act of beatification officially recognized Featherstone's martyrdom and esteemed him as a Blessed within the Catholic Church.
