Growing up, Ricardo felt a strong calling to dedicate his life completely to God, and this led him to join the Congregation of Saint Peter ad Vincula. He commenced his religious formation in Marseille, France, where he entered the novitiate. On completing his novitiate, he professed his vows in 1931, committing himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
After his initial religious training, Blessed Ricardo pursued his theological studies in Barcelona, Spain, where he demonstrated exceptional intellectual capabilities and a deep understanding of the Catholic faith. His dedication and enthusiasm for learning earned him a degree in theology, further enriching his spiritual journey.
However, during this period, Spain was ravaged by the violent and tumultuous Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Blessed Ricardo Guerravillazan, embodying unwavering courage and steadfast faith, chose to remain steadfast in his commitment to God despite the dangers surrounding him. Despite the escalating religious persecution and societal tensions, he willingly embraced his vocation, refusing to renounce his faith or abandon his religious community.
Tragically, on 15 February 1937, in Barcelona, Spain, Blessed Ricardo Guerravillazan's commitment to his faith led to his martyrdom. He was shot, becoming a heroic witness to his unwavering devotion to Christ and the Catholic Church.
In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis proclaimed the martyrdom of Blessed Ricardo Guerravillazan on 18 December 2017 through a formal decree. This declaration marked a significant acknowledgment of his sacrifice and supreme witness to the Catholic faith.
Blessed Ricardo was officially beatified on 10 November 2018 by Pope Francis in a solemn ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain.
