Blessed Restituto Santiago Allende, also known as José De Arimatea, was a devout monk and member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on June 10, 1902, in Bustillo del Monte, Santander, Spain. Blessed Restituto lived a life dedicated to serving God and others through his vocation as a religious brother.
Blessed Restituto's deep faith and commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church led him to join the Marist Brothers, an educational order founded by Saint Marcellin Champagnat. As a Marist Brother, he dedicated himself to the education and spiritual formation of young people, employing the principles of Catholic education to instill values, knowledge, and love for God in his students.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Restituto was martyred for his faith. He displayed unwavering courage and unwavering devotion to God, even in the face of persecution and hostility. On September 4, 1936, he was tragically killed in Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain.
Blessed Restituto Santiago Allende's heroic witness to the Christian faith has not gone unnoticed. His life and martyrdom were recognized by the Catholic Church, and on June 3, 2013, Pope Francis officially decreed that he would be venerated as a martyr.
