Blessed Recaredo Centelles Abad, also known as Riccardo, was born on 23 May 1904 in La Vall d‚ÄôUixó, Castellón, Spain. He studied at seminaries in Tortosa and Tarragona, where he developed a strong devotion to the Catholic faith. Inspired by his calling, Recaredo was ordained a priest on 25 May 1929.
As a priest, Father Recaredo became a member of the Diocesan Worker Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He dedicated his life to serving the Church and spreading the Gospel. Known for his passionate commitment to fostering religious vocations, Father Recaredo served as the vocation director at the Tarragona seminary. His guidance and efforts played an essential role in nurturing and encouraging young men to consider a life dedicated to the priesthood.
In recognition of his tremendous leadership abilities, Father Recaredo was appointed as the rector of the seminary at Tortosa. In this role, he continued to shape the young minds of seminarians, helping them to grow spiritually and intellectually. Father Recaredo's dedication to his students and his profound spirituality made a lasting impact on those he mentored.
Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Father Recaredo fell victim to the terrible violence that swept through Spain. On 25 October 1936, he was martyred, bravely sacrificing his life for his faith. Father Recaredo was shot at the gates of the cemetery at Nules, Castellón, Spain, where he was buried.
The remarkable life and martyrdom of Father Recaredo did not go unnoticed. His profound faith and selfless devotion to the Church led to his veneration by the faithful. Pope John Paul II, recognizing Father Recaredo's martyrdom, declared him venerable on 6 July 1993, with a decree of martyrdom. Later, on 1 October 1995, Pope John Paul II beatified Father Recaredo Centelles Abad, acknowledging his sanctity and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his Catholic faith.
