Biography

Blessed Raoul of Vaucelles, also known as Radulphe, Ralph, Raul, or Rodulphe, was a Benedictine Cistercian monk and spiritual student of Saint Bernard at Clairvaux Abbey. He was sent by Bernard to found and govern a Cistercian abbey of Vaucelles in the diocese of Cambrai, France.

Born in England, little is known about the early life of Raoul of Vaucelles. However, it is believed that he felt a deep calling to the monastic life, leading him to join the Benedictine community. It was during his time at Clairvaux Abbey, under the spiritual guidance of Saint Bernard, that he deepened his commitment to the contemplative and ascetic path.

Recognizing Raoul's spiritual depth and dedication, Saint Bernard selected him to establish a new Cistercian monastery in Vaucelles. This task was not an easy one, as it demanded not only a strong faith but also great organizational skills and leadership. Raoul took on the challenge with zeal, following in the footsteps of Saint Bernard and implementing the Cistercian way of life with utmost devotion.
