Blessed Ramón María Pérez Sousa, also known as Ramón Sousa, was a Spanish monk and member of the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance. He was born on 1 August 1903 in Feás de Guinzo de Limia, a small village in the province of Orense, Spain. From a young age, Ramón displayed a deep spirituality and a calling to the religious life.
At the age of seventeen, Ramón entered the Carmelite monastery, embracing the rigorous life of a monk dedicated to prayer, contemplation, and penance. He fervently embraced the charism of the Carmelite Order, striving for perfection in his spiritual journey. Ramón's dedication and piety were admired by his fellow brethren, and he soon became known for his profound humility and simplicity.
During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, which began in 1936, anti-Catholic sentiment and persecution were rampant throughout Spain. The Carmelites, along with many other religious communities, found themselves targeted by those opposed to the faith. Despite the dangers, Ramón remained steadfast in his commitment to God and his religious vows.
Tragically, on 22 July 1936, Ramón was martyred for his unwavering faith. He was executed in Montoro, a town located in the province of Córdoba, where he was stationed as a religious. Ramón faced his death with unyielding courage and forgiveness, remaining true to his Carmelite spirituality until the end.

Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI declared him venerable on 1 July 2010, signifying that he lived a life of heroic virtue. Later, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified Ramón, declaring him blessed and worthy of veneration by the Catholic faithful.
Blessed Ramón María Pérez Sousa's life serves as an example of resilience and faithfulness in the face of persecution. His martyrdom reminds us of the countless men and women who have sacrificed their lives for the sake of their beliefs.
