Biography

Blessed Ramón Cervilla Luis, also known as Ramón Cervilla, was born on 29 March 1865 in Almuñécar, Granada, Spain. He was ordained a priest of the archdiocese of Granada on 1 March 1890, dedicating his life to serving the Catholic Church and his community.

Throughout his priestly ministry, Father Ramón Cervilla displayed a profound devotion to the teachings of Christ and a commitment to the spiritual well-being of his parishioners. He was known for his kindness, compassion, and dedication to his pastoral duties, faithfully attending to the sacramental and pastoral needs of his flock.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, which erupted in 1936, the peaceful life of Father Ramón Cervilla was disrupted by the hostilities. Fueled by religious and ideological tensions, the war posed significant dangers for those associated with the Catholic Church.

Despite the imminent danger, Father Ramón Cervilla chose to remain steadfast in his faith and commitment to the Church. He refused to renounce his religious beliefs, even in the face of persecution and the threat of death. Father Ramón Cervilla's unwavering faith and dedication to his vocation eventually led to his martyrdom.

On 17 August 1936, in the town of Salobreña, Granada, Father Ramón Cervilla Luis was martyred for his Catholic faith. Despite the hardships and suffering he endured, he forgave his killers, demonstrating an extraordinary display of Christian love and mercy.

Recognizing the exceptional virtue and sacrifice of Father Ramón Cervilla, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 28 November 2019, signifying that he lived a life of heroic virtue. Later, on 26 February 2022, Pope Francis beatified Ramón Cervilla Luis, declaring him blessed. The beatification ceremony took place at the Cathedral of La Encarnación del Señor in Granada, Spain, in which the Church bestowed upon him the title of "Blessed."

Today, Blessed Ramón Cervilla Luis serves as an inspiring example of unwavering faith, forgiveness, and dedication to the Catholic Church. His life and martyrdom stand as a testament to the enduring power of the Gospel message and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. As a blessed, his intercession is sought by those in need, and his feast day is celebrated on 17 August.
