Feast Day: September 25
Birth: October 28, 1899
Death: September 25, 1936
Blessed Rafael Pardo Molina, also known as Blessed Rafel Pardo Molina, was a Dominican co-operator brother who was born on October 28, 1899, in Valencia, Spain. He dedicated his life to the service of God and his Church, and on January 2, 1926, he made his profession as a religious brother.
Rafael Pardo Molina served as a sacristan, responsible for the care and preparation of the sacred vessels and objects used in the liturgy. However, his devotion and dedication to his duties extended far beyond the walls of the sacristy. During the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, when anti-Christian forces sought to destroy the Catholic faith throughout the country, Rafael courageously worked to protect and hide sacred images, relics, and vessels in the churches he cared for.
Putting his own life at risk, Blessed Rafael tirelessly safeguarded these precious religious items, recognizing their value both as symbols of faith and as integral parts of the Catholic tradition. His actions not only protected these objects but also demonstrated his deep love and commitment to the Catholic Church and its sacred heritage.
Tragically, on September 25, 1936, in the town of Piera in Tarragona, Spain, Blessed Rafael Pardo Molina became a martyr. He was ruthlessly executed by anti-Christian forces for his unwavering dedication to the Catholic faith and his efforts to protect its sacred artifacts. His brave sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the unspeakable persecution endured by the Church during this dark period in Spanish history.
In recognition of his martyrdom and his exemplary life, Pope John Paul II declared Blessed Rafael Pardo Molina venerable on December 20, 1999, through a decree of martyrdom. On March 11, 2001, Pope John Paul II further elevated his status by beatifying him, acknowledging his sanctity and the enduring impact of his witness.
Blessed Rafael Pardo Molina's feast day is celebrated on September 25th, the anniversary of his martyrdom. His life continues to be an inspiration to all Catholics, reminding us of the importance of defending and protecting our faith even in the face of persecution.
