Biography

Blessed Rafael Alonso Gutiérrez, born on June 14, 1890, in Ontinyent, Valencia, Spain, was a devout Catholic layman and a shining example of faith and compassion. He was married to Maria Adelaid Ruiz Glens in 1916, and together they were blessed with four daughters.

During the day, Rafael worked as a postmaster in Ontinyent, fulfilling his professional duties with diligence and integrity. However, his dedication to the Catholic faith extended far beyond his regular work hours. By night, he humbly served as a catechist and youth teacher at his local parish, sharing his love for God and spreading the teachings of Christ to the younger generations.

Rafael's devotion was not limited to his parish responsibilities alone. He actively participated in various Catholic organizations, including the Catholic Legion, Catholic Action, School of Christ, and the Association of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Additionally, he was a proud member of the Franciscan Tertiary, embracing the spirituality and mission of the Franciscan order.

The Spanish Civil War deeply affected the lives of many faithful Catholics, and Rafael was no exception. Arrested by Communist militia for his unwavering commitment to his Catholic faith, Rafael endured imprisonment and relentless abuse, all in an attempt to force him to renounce his beliefs. Despite the physical and emotional torment, Rafael remained steadfast in his devotion to Catholicism, refusing to renounce his faith.

On August 11, 1936, Rafael, along with fellow martyr Blessed Carlos Diaz, was taken to a roadside and executed by shooting. Miraculously, Rafael survived the initial attack and was left abandoned. With the help of loyal friends, he was quickly hidden at a local Capuchin convent for his safety. However, the wounds inflicted upon him were severe, and Rafael tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

Even in his final moments, Rafael demonstrated remarkable Christian virtue and forgiveness. He strongly advocated against any form of retribution, revenge, or feud between his grieving family and his persecutors. His unwavering faith and ability to forgive epitomized the teachings of Christ, leaving a profound impact on all who encountered his story.

Recognizing the extraordinary virtue and martyrdom of Blessed Rafael Alonso Gutiérrez, Pope John Paul II declared his veneration on December 18, 2000, through a decree of martyrdom. On March 11, 2001, in a solemn ceremony, Pope John Paul II beatified him, honoring his extraordinary witness to the faith and his unwavering commitment to forgiveness and reconciliation.
