Biography

Blessed Rafał Chyliński, also known as Melchior Chylinski, was a devout young man whose family affectionately called him "the little monk." Born on 8 January 1694 in Buk, Poznan, Poland, Melchior's piety and devotion were evident from an early age. After completing his education at the Jesuit college in Poznan, he surprised many by joining the cavalry. Within three years, Melchior had risen to the rank of officer.

However, in 1715, against the advice of his brothers in arms, Melchior made a life-altering decision. He answered the call to religious life and joined the Conventual Friars Minor in Kraków, Poland. Taking the name Rafa≈Ç, he was ordained a priest in 1717.

From there, Rafał was assigned to various parishes in nine different cities. Eventually, he was sent to Lagiewniki in central Poland, where he spent most of the last 13 years of his life. It was in Lagiewniki that Rafał's selfless and compassionate nature truly shone.

He dedicated himself tirelessly to serving the poor and vulnerable, distributing food, supplies, and clothing to those in need. Rafał's love for music and his talent for playing the harp, lute, and mandolin were also prominent in his ministry. He used his musical talents to accompany liturgical hymns during religious services, creating a solemn and uplifting atmosphere.

One testament to Rafał's compassionate spirit was his devotion to those affected by natural disasters and epidemics. He spent 20 months in Warsaw ministering to victims of floods and other calamities, providing solace and assistance to those who had lost everything.

Rafał gained a reputation for his straightforward and insightful sermons, which resonated with all who heard them. His generosity and genuine care for others drew people from all walks of life to seek his guidance and support. He was known as a great confessor, offering forgiveness, understanding, and spiritual advice to those who came to him in penance.

On 2 December 1741, Rafał Chyliński passed away at Łagiewniki, Łodźkie, Poland. The Conventual church there soon became a place of pilgrimage, as numerous faithful sought to honor and seek intercession from this beloved priest.

Recognizing the holiness of Rafał's life, Pope Pius XII declared him venerable on 13 May 1949, acknowledging his heroic virtues. Then, on 9 June 1991, during a beatification ceremony in Warsaw, Poland, Pope John Paul II officially beatified Rafał Chyliński, affirming his sanctity and offering him as a model of piety and dedication for the faithful to emulate.

Blessed Rafał Chyliński continues to inspire people with his self-sacrificing life and priestly ministry. His deep love for God and his unwavering dedication to serving others make him an example of genuine Christian virtue and charity.
