Biography

Blessed Rafaél García Torres, also known as Rafaél Torres, was a layman of the diocese of Almería, Spain, who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church and his feast day is celebrated on May 20th.

Rafaél García Torres was born on February 22, 1904, in Almería, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and from a young age, he demonstrated a strong faith and dedication to his spiritual life. Rafaél was known for his kindness, generosity, and love for his fellow brothers and sisters.

In his early adulthood, Rafaél became actively involved in his local parish and participated in various religious activities. Recognizing his heroic witness and sacrifice, Pope Francis declared Rafaél García Torres venerable on June 14, 2016, through a decree of martyrdom. Subsequently, he was beatified on March 25, 2017, in a ceremony held in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, representing the Holy Father.
