Biography

Blessed Purificación Ximénez Y Ximénez, also known as Sister Purificación of Saint Joseph, was a devout Catholic nun and a member of the Carmelite Sisters of Charity. She was born on 3 February 1871 in Valencia, Spain.

As a young girl, Purificación dedicated her life to God and joined the Carmelite Sisters of Charity, an order founded in 1891. In this religious community, she embraced a life of prayer, contemplation, and selfless service to others. Known for her deep spirituality and unwavering faith, Sister Purificación lived a life of humility, poverty, and obedience.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, which raged from 1936 to 1939, Spain was deeply divided along political and ideological lines. The Catholic Church was targeted by anti-religious factions, leading to the persecution of many clergy members and religious individuals. Sister Purificación, along with her fellow sisters, faced great danger and risked their lives to continue practicing their faith and caring for the needy.

Tragically, on 23 September 1936, Sister Purificación was martyred in the town of Benicalap, Valencia. She courageously stood firm in her faith and refused to renounce her religious beliefs, even in the face of persecution and imminent danger. Witnessing to the depths of her devotion, she fearlessly chose to sacrifice her life rather than betray her commitment to God and her religious vows.

Following her martyrdom, the holy life and martyrdom of Sister Purificación Ximénez Y Ximénez gained recognition. On 20 December 1999, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom, officially declaring her a martyr of the faith. Her beatification followed on 11 March 2001, with Pope John Paul II recognizing her as Blessed Purificación Ximénez Y Ximénez, a model of sanctity and heroic virtue.

Today, Blessed Purificación Ximénez Y Ximénez is honored and venerated by the faithful on her feast day, which falls on 23 September. Her life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration for all believers, emphasizing the importance of unwavering faith, dedication to God, and the call to embrace Christ's teachings even in the face of persecution and adversity.
