Blessed Protasi Cubells Minguell, also known as Brother Antonio, was a devout member of the Hospitallers of Saint John of God. He dedicated his life to serving others, particularly children, in various hospitals where he lived and worked as a vicar-prior.
Born on 27th December 1880 in Coll de Nargó, Lleida, Spain, Protasi Cubells Minguell displayed exceptional musical talent from a young age. He utilized his musical abilities not only to serve the Church but also to support himself financially, teaching music lessons when necessary.
However, Protasi Cubells Minguell's true passion lay in caring for sick children. He recognized the immense suffering they faced and felt a deep calling to alleviate their pain and provide them with comfort and care. He devoted all his time to working in children's hospitals, going beyond his duties to ensure they received the utmost attention and love.
Tragically, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Antonio faced martyrdom for his unwavering commitment to his faith. On 14th December 1936, in Barcelona, Spain, he valiantly gave his life as a testament to his faith in the face of persecution.
Brother Antonio, along with his fellow Martyred Hospitallers of Spain, is venerated on two feast days: 14th December and 30th July. These days serve as a celebration of his selfless service and sacrifice.
Recognizing his martyrdom and his dedication to caring for the sick, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 14th May 1991. Furthermore, Protasi Cubells Minguell was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 25th October 1992, acknowledging his holiness and the exemplary life he led.
