Biography

Blessed Ponzio Of Barellis, also known as Ponce of Barelli, was born in Toulouse, France. Little is known about his early life, but he distinguished himself academically by receiving a doctorate in civil law. However, his true calling was to the religious life, and he joined the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, commonly known as the Mercedarians.

Ponzio's dedication and leadership abilities did not go unnoticed, and in 1348, Pope Clement VI appointed him as the Master-General of the Mercedarians. This prestigious position placed him at the helm of the order, responsible for its administration and the spiritual well-being of its members.

During his tenure as Master-General, Ponzio faced significant challenges caused by the devastating effects of the plague. The Mercedarians had suffered tremendous losses in terms of members and houses, but Ponzio was determined to rebuild the order. His diligent efforts and unwavering faith led to the rejuvenation of the Mercedarians, enabling them to continue their mission of ransoming Christians held captive by Muslims.

Perhaps Ponzio's most notable achievement was leading the redemption of 1,600 Christians who had been enslaved by Muslims. His courage, negotiation skills, and dedication to their cause resulted in the liberation of these individuals, setting an inspiring example of Christian charity and mercy.

Blessed Ponzio Of Barellis died in his hometown of Toulouse on October 17, 1364. He was laid to rest at the convent of Perpignan, France, where his memory is honored and venerated. Although there is currently no specific date of his beatification, his exemplary life and contributions to the Mercedarians have led many to consider him blessed.
