Blessed PlÖcid FÖbrega JuliÖ, also known as Brother Bernat, was born on 18 February 1889 in Camallera, Girona, Spain. He was the son of Pablo and Maria JuliÖ. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, PlÖcid joined the Marist Brothers of the Schools as a teenager at San Andrea Palo de Mar in Barcelona. He took the name Brother Bernat and made his vows on 8 September 1905.
Throughout his life, Brother Bernat dedicated himself to the service of others, particularly the poor. He taught in various schools in Barcelona, Valencia, and Igualada, where he was known for his zeal, personal piety, and commitment to his ministry. His passion for helping the marginalized led him to emphasize social justice and to make it a significant part of his work.
Brother Bernat served as a spiritual director at several Marist houses, where he shared his wisdom and guidance with his fellow religious. Additionally, he organized an oratory for children, serving as a catechist and fostering their spiritual growth. His devotion to the education of the young extended to teaching First Communion classes and encouraging boys to consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
Tragically, Brother Bernat's life was cut short during the Spanish Civil War. He was martyred on 6 October 1934 in Barruelo, Palencia, Spain, as a result of his unwavering dedication to his faith and his commitment to the disadvantaged.
Recognizing his heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 22 June 2004. Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Brother Bernat, granting him the title of Blessed. This beatification acknowledges his saintly life and his ultimate sacrifice for his beliefs.
Blessed PlÖcid FÖbrega JuliÖ, or Brother Bernat, remains an inspirational figure of selfless devotion to the service of God and the poor. His life serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion, social justice, and the call to aid those in need.
