Biography

Blessed Piotr Edward Dankowski, also known as Peter Edward Dankowski, was a Catholic priest who served in the Archdiocese of Kraków, Poland. He was born on June 21, 1908, in Jordanów, a town located in Malopolskie, Poland. Throughout his life, Father Dankowski dedicated himself to serving the people, particularly those who were impoverished and in need.

One of Father Dankowski's notable roles was as a vicar of the parish of Zakopane. He was highly regarded for his selflessness and compassion towards the poor, offering his assistance and care to those who were marginalized and disadvantaged. During World War II, when Poland was under German occupation, Father Dankowski played a significant role in aiding escapees who were hiding from the Nazis. His courageous efforts helped save numerous lives during this tumultuous time.

Unfortunately, Father Dankowski's bravery and dedication to helping others would ultimately lead to his arrest. In May 1941, he was taken into custody by the Nazis and subsequently sentenced to the extermination camp in Oswiecim, more commonly known as Auschwitz. Despite the harsh conditions and the constant threat to his own safety, Father Dankowski continued to support and provide solace to his fellow prisoners.

Tragically, Father Dankowski's life was cut short on Good Friday, April 3, 1942, when he died in Auschwitz. His unwavering faith and steadfast commitment to helping others even in the face of immense danger and persecution serve as a testament to his holiness and heroism.

Recognizing his martyrdom and example of living the Gospel faithfully, Father Dankowski was venerated on March 26, 1999, by Pope John Paul II, who decreed his martyrdom. On June 13, 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified Father Dankowski in a solemn ceremony held in Warsaw, Poland.

Today, Blessed Piotr Edward Dankowski is remembered as one of the 108 Martys of World War II, venerated for his courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to serving others. His feast days are celebrated on April 3 and June 12, in remembrance of his martyrdom and as one of the 108 Martys of World War II. His life continues to inspire the faithful to emulate his selfless love and dedication to helping those in need.
