Biography

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, also known as the Man of the Eight Beatitudes, was born on April 6, 1901, in Turin, Italy. He was born into a wealthy and politically influential family. His mother, Adelaide Ametis, was a talented painter, while his father was an agnostic and the founder and editor of the liberal newspaper La Stampa. His father later became the Italian ambassador to Germany.

From a young age, Pier Giorgio displayed a deep piety and devotion to his Catholic faith. He was an average student academically but excelled in athletics, particularly in mountain climbing. His athletic prowess earned him great popularity among his peers, and he was affectionately known by the nickname "Terror" due to his mischievous sense of humor and fondness for practical jokes.

Pier Giorgio received his education at home, alongside his younger sister Luciana, under the guidance of tutors. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in an engineering program to study minerology.

Despite his privileged upbringing, Pier Giorgio was deeply committed to serving the poor and marginalized in society. He actively participated in Catholic groups such as the Apostleship of Prayer and the Company of the Most Blessed Sacrament, which focused on ministering to the poor and promoting Eucharistic adoration, Marian devotion, and personal chastity.

He also became involved in various political and social groups that sought to address the needs of the poor and oppose Fascism. These included the Young Catholic Workers Congress, the Popular Party, the Catholic Student Federation, Catholic Action, and Milites Mariae. Pier Giorgio ardently championed the Church's social teachings and dedicated his time and resources to improving the lives of those in need.

On May 28, 1922, Pier Giorgio enrolled as a Dominican tertiary, taking the name Girolamo (Jerome). His devotion to Saint Catherine of Siena and Saint Thomas Aquinas characterized this period of his life.

Pier Giorgio's selfless dedication to serving others led him to spend his entire fortune on aiding the needy and visiting the sick. Tragically, during one of his missions to assist the sick, he contracted poliomyelitis, a disease that ultimately claimed his life.

Pier Giorgio Frassati passed away on July 4, 1925, in Turin, Italy, at the young age of 24. He was buried in the family cemetery in Pollone, Italy. In 1981, when his body was moved to the Cathedral of Turin, it was found to be incorrupt.

Recognizing his extraordinary virtues and the impact he had on those around him, Pier Giorgio was venerated on October 23, 1987, with a decree of heroic virtues issued by Pope John Paul II. He was later beatified on May 20, 1990, by the same pope.

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating the power of faith, selflessness, and dedication to building a more just and compassionate society. His feast day is celebrated on July 4.
