Biography

Blessed Petrus Kawano, also known as Blessed Peter Kawano, was born in 1615 in Nagasaki, Japan. He was the son of Blessed Marina Tanaura, a devout Catholic, who instilled a strong sense of faith in her son from an early age. Petrus grew up in a time when Christians in Japan were facing intense persecution due to the government's prohibition on Christianity.

At the age of seven, Petrus was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his Catholic faith. On September 11, 1622, in Nishizaka, Nagasaki, he was beheaded alongside numerous other Christians who bravely refused to renounce their beliefs. The execution took place during the reign of the Tokugawa Shogunate, known for its strict anti-Christian policies.

Blessed Petrus Kawano is celebrated as one of the 205 Martyrs of Japan, and his feast day is commemorated on September 11. Additionally, he is also honored on September 10 as part of the collective feast day for the martyrs of Japan. These martyrs, including Petrus, are remembered for their unwavering faith and sacrifice in the face of persecution and oppression.

The Holy See recognized the martyrdom of Blessed Petrus Kawano on February 26, 1866, when Pope Blessed Pius IX decreed him venerable. A little over a year later, on May 7, 1867, Pope Blessed Pius IX beatified Petrus, acknowledging his martyrdom and raising him to the status of blessed. His beatification serves as a testament to his heroic witness and devotion to Christ.

Although there is no specific information about his representation, Blessed Petrus Kawano remains an inspiration for Catholics worldwide, particularly Japanese Catholics, who continue to face challenges in practicing their faith.
