Biography

Blessed Petrus Jo Suk, also known as Jo Su-gwang, was a married layman of the Archdiocese of Seoul, Korea, born in 1787 in Yanggeun, Gyeonggi, South Korea. He lived during a time when the Catholic faith was heavily persecuted in Korea.

Not much is known about the early life of Blessed Petrus Jo Suk. However, it is believed that he grew up in a devout Catholic family and was educated in the teachings of the Church. Despite living in a period when Catholicism was suppressed by the ruling Joseon Dynasty, he remained strong in his faith and committed to practicing and promoting the Catholic Church's teachings.

Blessed Petrus Jo Suk was married and had a family of his own. He exemplified the importance of living out his Catholic faith within the context of family life. His devotion to his spouse and children served as a powerful witness to the faith, as he demonstrated the transformation and love that can come through Christ.

The exact nature of Blessed Petrus Jo Suk's occupation is not mentioned. In 1819, when the persecution of Catholics intensified, Blessed Petrus Jo Suk was arrested and imprisoned for refusing to renounce his faith. Alongside many other Korean Catholics, he endured harsh conditions and multiple forms of torture. Despite the suffering inflicted upon him, Blessed Petrus Jo Suk remained steadfast, refusing to compromise his convictions.

On August 3, 1819, Blessed Petrus Jo Suk was executed for his commitment to the Catholic faith in Seoul, South Korea. His martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering dedication and devotion to Christ, even in the face of immense persecution.

It wasn't until centuries later, on 7th February 2014, that Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of Blessed Petrus Jo Suk, along with 123 other Korean Catholics martyrs. Their martyrdom was considered a prominent symbol of the growth and endurance of the Catholic Church in Korea. Pope Francis beatified Blessed Petrus Jo Suk on August 16, 2014, with his feast day celebrated on August 3. He is commemorated alongside the other Martyrs of Korea on September 20.
