Blessed Ioannes Hattori Jingoro was a married layman of the diocese of Fukuoka, Japan. He was born around 1570 in Muro, Nara, Japan, and is best known as the father of Blessed Petrus Hattori.
Living during a time of intense persecution against Christians in Japan, Blessed Ioannes, together with his family, embraced the Catholic faith despite the risks involved. He remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith and actively participated in the life of the Church. Though there is no specific information about his occupation, his dedication as a family man and his strong faith exemplified his role as a layman.
In the year 1609, when the anti-Christian sentiment in Japan reached its peak, Blessed Ioannes was martyred for his unwavering faith. He met his death on the 11th of January in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto, Japan. Although details of his martyrdom are not provided, it is well-known that he faced persecution along with countless other Catholics during the period of Japan's Christian persecution.
Blessed Ioannes Hattori Jingoro was officially recognized for his martyrdom and venerated by Pope Benedict XVI on the 1st of June, 2007, with a decree on martyrdom. Following this recognition, he was beatified on the 24th of November, 2008, by Pope Benedict XVI. The beatification ceremony took place at the Nagasaki Prefectural Baseball Park (Big N Stadium) in Nagasaki, Japan, and was presided over by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins.
